Victory Day Marked in African Countries Through Memorial Tree-Planting Events

(MENAFN) Several African countries have held commemorative events marking the 81st anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, with ceremonies involving diplomats, local participants, and members of Russian communities, according to reports.

The activities took place as Russia prepared its own Victory Day observances on May 9, with events abroad focusing on remembrance initiatives linked to Soviet wartime losses.

In Guinea, the Russian diplomatic mission participated in a “Garden of Memory” initiative at its embassy grounds in Conakry. The event included the planting of trees and shrubs with the participation of embassy staff and local school students, dedicated to honoring Soviet soldiers who died during the war.

The ambassador in Conakry described the project as a long-term commemorative effort aimed at preserving historical memory and recognizing the sacrifices of previous generations.

The broader “Garden of Memory” program, launched in 2020, is presented as an environmental and memorial initiative involving the planting of tens of millions of trees, each symbolically linked to Soviet wartime casualties.

Similar activities were also held in Mozambique, where embassy representatives, students, and members of the Russian diaspora took part in planting saplings as part of the same campaign.

In Mauritania, the initiative was implemented for the first time this year, with participants planting trees on embassy grounds in the capital.

Organizers described the program as having both commemorative and environmental objectives, including efforts to combat desertification, stabilize soil conditions, and improve local ecological conditions in arid regions.

The events reflect ongoing efforts to mark World War II remembrance abroad through cultural diplomacy and environmental symbolism alongside traditional commemorative ceremonies.
