African Union Commission Chairperson Condemns Niger Attacks

(MENAFN) The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, condemned recent attacks in Niger, including an assault on Hamani Diori International Airport in Niamey, while reaffirming the bloc’s solidarity with the country.

Youssouf said he received news “with deep concern” of the airport attack, which occurred overnight between Jan. 28 and 29, and expressed “profound sadness” over a deadly Jan. 18 attack in the village of Bosiye in western Niger that reportedly killed around 30 civilians.

“These heinous acts form part of the campaign of terror conducted by violent extremist groups deliberately targeting civilian populations and public infrastructure,” he stated, praising the “swift and effective response of the Nigerien security forces,” which helped contain the airport incident.

The AU chief offered condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed the organization’s solidarity with the Nigerien government and people. He also highlighted ongoing efforts by Nigerien authorities to counter terrorism and violent extremism, including recent military operations.

Youssouf cited the results of a major operation in the Tillabéri region, which reportedly neutralized several armed elements, disrupted terror networks, and recovered property looted from civilians. He emphasized that terrorism and violent extremism continue to pose serious threats to peace, stability, and territorial integrity in affected countries and reiterated the African Union Commission’s readiness to support Niger’s counterterrorism efforts.

Meanwhile, the US State Department ordered the evacuation of non-essential government staff and family members from its embassy in Niamey, warning of “real risks” to safety. A travel advisory issued by the department advises against any travel to Niger due to crime, unrest, terrorism, health risks, and kidnapping threats.
