Central African Republic Schedules General Elections

(MENAFN) After multiple delays, the Central African Republic is set to hold its general elections on December 28, a government representative confirmed on Tuesday.

This announcement comes after a series of postponements that had cast doubt on the electoral timeline.

Bruno Yapande, the minister responsible for territorial administration, shared the update with reporters following discussions with the national electoral body.

He noted that voters will cast their ballots for presidential, parliamentary, regional, and municipal offices.

The electoral authority is currently focused on revising and finalizing the voter registry to ensure the process runs smoothly.

Yapande emphasized that the preparations for the elections are moving forward swiftly, despite encountering certain obstacles.

He also disclosed that approximately 2.3 million individuals have been registered to vote, and the finalized list of voters is expected to be made public by August 29.

President Faustin Archange Touadera, who initially took office in 2016 and secured re-election in 2020, announced in July his decision to run for a third term, a move that has sparked some criticism.

Nonetheless, he has been acknowledged for his role in stabilizing the country’s security landscape following extended periods of unrest.

In a development last month, over 70 rebel fighters laid down their arms and were demobilized, as reported by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The individuals who surrendered belonged to two armed groups: the Union for Peace in the CAR (UPC) and the Return, Reclamation and Rehabilitation (3R) factions.
