Central African Republic Set to Conduct General Elections on December 28

(MENAFN) The Central African Republic (CAR) will conduct its long-delayed general elections on December 28, a government official confirmed Tuesday, ending months of uncertainty.

Bruno Yapande, the country’s territorial administration minister, told reporters after meeting with the electoral authority that voters will cast ballots in presidential, parliamentary, regional, and municipal contests. The electoral commission is currently focused on finalizing updates to the voter register.

Yapande stated that the electoral process is advancing quickly, even though it faces certain difficulties.

Approximately 2.3 million citizens are registered to vote, with the final voter list slated for publication on August 29, the minister added.

President Faustin Archange Touadera, who first took office in 2016 and secured re-election in 2020, announced in July his bid for a controversial third term.

Touadera is credited with notable security gains following years of conflict. Last month, more than 70 rebels laid down arms and were demobilized, according to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

Those disarmed fighters belonged to the Union for Peace in the CAR (UPC) and the Return, Reclamation and Rehabilitation (3R) rebel groups.
