Indian Lawmaker Says Russia Treats Global South as Equal at SPIEF

(MENAFN) A senior Indian lawmaker has said that Russia is engaging the Global South as an equal partner at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), contrasting it with what he described as Western-dominated global institutions, according to reports.

Speaking on the sidelines of the forum, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Sujeet Kumar stated that the event provided greater representation and participation for countries from the Global South, adding that their perspectives were being meaningfully heard.

According to reports, Kumar expressed appreciation for Russia’s approach to international engagement, arguing that many developing countries have limited influence in major global institutions such as the United Nations Security Council, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank. He also noted that Africa only recently gained representation in the G20 following the African Union’s inclusion during India’s 2023 presidency.

He further referenced the structure of the UN Security Council, highlighting its permanent membership system established after World War II, and suggested that global governance systems should evolve to better reflect current geopolitical realities. He pointed to alternative platforms such as BRICS and the G20 as more representative forums in a multipolar world.

The lawmaker also commented on broader geopolitical dynamics, stating that Western influence—particularly that of the United States—has often been perceived as hegemonic over recent decades. He argued that more inclusive decision-making structures are necessary to address global challenges effectively.

Kumar added that India maintains an independent foreign policy and will not yield to external pressure regarding its strategic choices, including its energy trade relations with Russia. He emphasized that India’s positions are guided by national interests.

According to reports, he also described India as increasingly assertive in global affairs, rejecting what he characterized as attempts to impose external policy constraints on the country.
